Communication and Interaction
- Children may have difficulties with receptive and/or expressive language.
- Children’s pronunciation may not be clear or fluent.
- Children may have limited vocabulary, struggle to respond verbally and have difficulty following instructions.
- Children may find social situations and engaging with peers difficult.
- Children may be diagnosed with a specific condition such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Asperger's.
In school, we have a number of interventions and resources in place to support children with communication and interaction needs.
1) Universal provision (quality first teaching for all)
- All KS1 staff trained in Makaton.
- Makaton Sign of the week learned throughout whole school.
- ELKLAN trained TA to work with all children and support other members of staff.
- Visual timetables present in all classes of the sequence of the day.
- Key vocabulary explained in every lesson to aid understanding.
- Structured school and class routines.
- Whole school training by Autism Education Trust (AET) on inclusive, calm classrooms
- Inclusion Support Manager circulating school throughout the day to support any children.
2) Targeted provision
- Targeted seating in class to ensure children with C&I needs have access to working walls with key vocabulary.
- SAL interventions for children on SALT register.
- NELI intervention for pupils in Reception
- Use of sound buttons and talking buttons.
3) Higher Needs provision
- Small group/1:1 SAL interventions.
- Makaton focused learning.
- Symbols/print used in planning and resources.
- Communication books.
- Advice from external agencies (SALT).
- Visits to Stepping Stones and Language School.
- Sessions with Inclusion Support Manager for children with ASD.
